American Jiu Jitsu Introduction to Self Defense Skills

Participants welcome at individual sessions (series)
Prereq: Eagerness to learn self-defense.

This course covers basic self-defense skills. Optional practices will be held on Saturdays from 3-6pm. We will be focusing on practical ground fighting skills; defense from knife, gun, and blunt-weapons; and multiple attacks. Classes are only open to MIT community members with valid athletics cards. IAP Classes are free for all participants. This series is designed for men and women without previous experience. Advanced classes are also offered. No real weapons are allowed on the mat. A Self-Defense PE-credit class is also offered concurrently in the adjacent room.

Introduction

We will introduce the skills class concept and begin with eye-hand coordination exercises. This class will focus on building reflex defenses from a striking attacker.

Blunt Weapon Defense I

We will introduce students to the use of blunt weapons (sticks, kubotans, ASPs, baseball bats, The CLUB, umbrellas, etc.) in self-defense.

Defense from the Ground

Saturday classes are grappling/ground-fighting skills classes. Please wear a gi if you have one. If not, make sure to wear comfortable clothes that will not tear easily (thick cotton shirts, sweat pants or shorts, etc.). In these classes we learn to defend ourselves when we end up on the ground.

Knife Defense Skills I

In this class, we will introduce students to the use of a knife as a self-defense tool. We will discuss the legalities of carrying and deploying knives and the extreme dangers involved with knife fights. Please wear dark clothes that can get dirty; we will be doing chalking exercises.

Gun Defense Skills I

We will go through several possible gun/robbery scenarios. This class will help students begin to develop the necessary mind-set and eye-hand coordination required to succesfully dissarm a gun-weilding assailant in close-proximity.

Knife Defense (Part II)

In this class, we will be covering attacker disarms from static, robbery-type knife attacks. We will learn to defend from assault where a knife is held to our chest, back or throat. Rubber and foam practice weapons will be used for safety.

Blunt Weapon Defense (Part II)

This class will focus on preempting an imminent attack by disarming an aggressor before they have a chance to deploy or use a blunt weapon.

Gun Defense (Part II)

In this class, we will cover techniques to stop an attacker from un-holstering or retrieving a hidden firearm. We will also continue our gun defenses by learning how to defend from a pistol-carrying attacker whose gun is near arm's reach.
