Shotokan Karate is a "hard" martial art with a focus on low, powerful stances, quick attacks, and grappling. There are optional regular tournaments for both kata and sparring. Weapons training is offered at Tufts weekly for interested students.

Shotokan Karate incorporates knowledge from Judo and Jiujitsu, modified for optimal application against a trained opponent.

Shotokan Karate is similar in many respects to Tae Kwon Do, but with deeper stances, a less defensive posture, and more of a focus on the upper body and grappling than on kicks.

Sensei Tabata is an 8th degree black belt in Shotokan Karate, with black belts in a number of other martial arts. We're lucky enough to have him teach weekly on campus.

Feel free to just come and watch if you want to get some idea of what we do.
