IAP 2007 Activity

Sleep: When, How, Why We Do It ; How You Can Get More of It
Cancelled
Prof. Marilyne Andersen, MIT, Prof. Steven Lockley from Harvard Medical School
Wed Jan 10, 17, 24, 09am-05:00pm, 3-370

Explores the fundamentals of sleep biology, how sleep timing and quality are controlled, how sleep is measured, what happens to your health if you don't get enough sleep, how your cognitive processes are affected by sleep loss, how aging affects sleep, the basis of common sleep disorders, sleep in unusual environments (e.g., during spaceflight), and even maybe how you can get some more of it. We will also review the role of the endogenous circadian pacemaker, 'or body clock' in the control of sleep and wake quality and how light affects this clock and other neurobehavioral functions.

Involves lectures and discussions with experts from the Harvard Medical School Division of Sleep Medicine, a field trip to an experimental sleep lab and an interactive computer lab to model how your alertness and performance depend on sleep.
