Adventures in scanning electron microscopy

The seminar is an introduction to the basic operation of a scanning electron microscope. The operating principles will be covered and the attendees will be trained on the use of the microscope. This is a modern scanning electron microscope with several advanced features: low pressure chamber and computer controlled positioning stage. The SEM is equipped with an energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) system for elemental analysis. Attendees will also be familiarized with the operation and capabilities of the EDS system. Attendees are encouraged to bring samples for exploration.

This class is about how you can apply your own creative skills to engineer impressive audio systems, focusing on the speakers. We will review the important aspects of electronics and acoustics; demonstrate the computerized tools that help design and measure speakers; and explore modern high-fidelity engineering. You will build your own pair of bookshelf speakers (comparable to commercial designs at $500-800) from scratch. The course includes 2 interactive classes (6-8pm)(TBA), and 3 workshops (9-11am) in the Hobby Shop. An additional 10-15 hours of shop time will be needed to complete speakers.

Chaos in Circuits and Systems

According to the American researcher JC Sprott, as the dimension of a system increases, the likelihood that it is chaotic also increases. For high-dimensional systems, chaos is the norm rather than the exception.

We will investigate organising principles of chaotic circuits as isolated nodes and as part of larger systems. Workshop participants will build a simple circuit exhibiting non-autonomous (driven) chaos, and the circuits will be interconnected to produce a chaotic network. We will use both visual and audio displays to represent the information within an elaboration of open hardware.

Jessica Rylan, a research affiliate at CAVS, is a sound artist and electronic musician. She designs and constructs modular synthesisers using analog electronic circuits to create a diversity of sounds.

This course will introduce you to the programming and operation of our new CNC milling machine, and CNC lathe. Basic part design and use of the CAD software for each machine tool will be covered. To learn the CAD packages and operation of the machines, several small projects will be designed and manufactured, after which students will be encouraged design a small project of their own.
All students need to bring a laptop computer to install and run the CAD software. Seperate sessions will be scheduled for downloading and testing project programs on the CNC machines.

We will walk you through some simple design examples, and will submit designs of your choosing to a production house so you will get a set of small PCBs bearing your circuit layout. We presume you will be able to get to a PC on the web. If not we will help you work out alternative arrangements. You are welcome, but not required, to bring your laptop to this session. (Wireless available.)

One of the challenges with understanding the theory behind dynamic systems, such as controls and signal processing, is with visualizing the results of the system. Simulink lets you do exactly that through graphical blocks – it enables you to model, simulate, and analyze dynamic systems. This tutorial will introduce the fundamentals of Simulink. After attending, you will be able to build a working Simulink model, and get started with modeling of feedback systems and conducting frame-based frequency analysis in the Simulink environment. Please bring your laptop for hands on lab.

Learn to use the water jet in the Hobby Shop to cut intricate parts quickly and easily from a wide variety materials like metal, plastic, stone, and glass. In this class, you will learn about water jet technology, how to use the associated CAD software, and how to operate the OMAX Jet Machining Center. The first two classes will cover using OMAX software to make a 2D drawing and then the machine file that runs the waterjet. Everyone must bring their own Windows compatable laptop. Working in pairs students will learn safe machine operation, cutting the parts they have drawn(20 minute limit). Times will be sheduled at second class. Registration in shop with payment of fee.
