Hotel Rwanda - a FREE screening and discussion
Jyotsna Venkataramanan
Thu Jan 17, 07-10:00pm, 26-100

No enrollment limit, no advance sign up
Single session event

Co-sponsored by MIT STAND. Free African refreshments will be provided.

Hotel Rwanda will be followed by a lecture featuring Marie Gakuba, who was 8 years old during the genocide and lost both parents and four siblings. She was adopted in 1995 and moved here in 2004, and is now a junior at the University of New Hampshire majoring in political science and international affairs.

Don Cheadle gives a riveting performance as Paul Rusesabagina, the manager of a European-owned hotel in Rwanda, who created a secret refugee camp for the Tutsi people during the brutal genocide committed against them by the Hutu people in 1994. His efforts helped to save 1200 lives out of close to a million who were killed. Hotel Rwanda shows this man's courage, while also capturing the political events that occurred between April and September 1994.

Tahmineh Milani, The Hidden Half (Iran, 2001)
Mériam Belli
Fereshteh recalls revolutionary days in the wake of the Islamic Revolution of 1979, as her husband, a judge, has to adjucate a female political prisoner. Feminist filmmaker T. Milani was arrested "on charges of 'supporting those waging war against God'[revealing]how central questions of [...] contested national memory have become in the struggles being waged for democratic change & freedoms in Iran." Corneliu Porumboliu, 12:08 East of Bucharest (Romania, 2006)
Dan Andrei Iancu
This comedy won the prize for best first feature at Cannes in 2006. A Romanian television series host organizes a show about the 1989 "revolution" which, 16 years earlier, overthrew Nicolae Ceausescu's Communist government. The show turns satirical comedy when the show's guests prove to be suspicious characters, and that call-in viewers express their dissenting opinions about the events.

Peter Raymont, The World Stopped Watching (USA, 2003)
Jeffrey Ravel
"14 years later, filmmakers Raymont and Crooks return to Nicaragua with two American journalists (in the original film) and a Canadian journalist, La Presse - to discover what became of the first revolution conducted in the glare of the world media. They question the role/responsibility of journalists & their employers who first put Nicaraguans under the microscope."

Elizabeth Wood
"Set in central Russia during the civil war of 1918, its narrative describes the bloody battles between the red revolutionary troops and the counter-revolutionary whites in the hills along the Volga. ... There is little in the way of a screenplay, but the commentary on war and the abuse of power is eloquent enough to make words seem unnecessary."

Sponsored by MIT Comparative Media Studies (CMS) and Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI), this non-technical activity focuses on the theoretical, historical, cultural, social, and aesthetic elements of interactive narrative and game structures. Morning lectures explore linear and non-linear storytelling across media, audio-visual elements, game theory, and techniques to increase the depth of interactive console games and enhance storytelling. Afternoons run as workshops where participants collaborate in teams to design interactive story scenarios to be presented during a final session on Friday afternoon.

Participants welcome at individual sessions (series)

Born in Istanbul, Nuri Bilge Ceylan has emerged as one of the world's most exciting filmmakers. His most recent film Iklimler(Climates)won both the FIPRESCI Prize and was nominated for the Golden Palm at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. Over four nights we will show a complete retrospective of his work beginning on January 29th with his short film Koza (Cocoon) and his first full-length feature, Kasaba (The Town) and screening one film each of the next three nights. A style reminiscent of Antonioni, provocative, sad and beautiful.
