Cox and Box is a hilarious three-man operetta in one act by Sir Arthur Sullivan. It tells the story of two men who discover they have quite a lot in common. Cox, a journeyman hatter who works by day, and Box, a journeyman printer who works at night have, in fact, been inhabiting the same room for a considerable length of time before they discovers each other’s existence. Their landlord, Sergeant Bouncer—late of the Dampshire Yeomanry, with military reminiscences—has been collecting double-rent on the apartment by putting Cox’s things away during the day and Box’s at night. But Box and Cox have more in common than their bedroom. When they discover that they are both sought in marriage by Penelope Ann—the proprietor of a considerable number of bathing machines—each is prepared to fight to the death so that the other may marry her.
