Chinese Brush Painting: Flowers and Birds

Explore flowers and birds with a combination of traditional Chinese brush and western painting techniques. Use freehand brushwork to explore expressiveness, interpretation, and abstraction. Students will learn how to paint using ink, watercolor, and gouache on rice paper. This class starts September 26.
1. Rice paper, roll or sheet, unsized (paper made in An Hui China is better)

2. Brushes, small, medium (size like finger, so-called orchid bamboo brush), large (size like thumb)

3. Color: Watercolor or gouache. Basic colors you will need are Carmine, Prussian blue, and Middle Yellow. More are fine, you may buy the 12-color set.

4. Ink, liquid, Chinese or Japanese. You don't need to bring the ink to the studio, school will offer it.

Drawing 101 is an introductory course to the basics of drawing.
This IAP class will cover perspective, three dimensional space, abstraction,
form, and light. There will also be an art history lecture. This
is mainly a studio art class so drawing will be in integral
part of it.

There will be several drawing assignments.

It is recommended that you attend all four classes.

Drawing Materials: Please bring a sketch book,

Participants should bring one or two examples of images generated from their own data or problems they are interested in working on. The group will discuss and suggest making some changes. On the second day, we will discuss your "re-dos". You are also welcome to bring some examples of images that seem to "work".

The number of places is limited to maintain a conversational workshop atmosphere.

About the activity leaders: Felice Frankel is a Senior Research Fellow at Harvard University's Initiative in Innovative Computing (IIC) and Research Scientist at MIT; Rosalind Reid is editor of American Scientist and also a Fellow at IIC; Rebecca Perry is a HASTS graduate student and graphic artist.

The Saturday sessions are workshops of progressive lighting control. Photography as an Art form is integrated into Digital Image Capture and Workflow. Class member skills will be enhanced to a minimum professional level. The goal for each is the production of a portfolio. The fees cover those and other costs. Graduate and Undergraduate students - in teams of two.
Competition objectives: Sustainability in Design - Design an architecturally successful residential space that includes skylights and ensures as much autonomy from electric lighting as possible, ensures visual comfort based on a set of criteria, limits solar gains and ensures acceptable natural ventilation. Classes will include lectures about daylighting, ventilation and skylights, simulation tool demonstrations, hands-on sessions and desk critiques.
Projects will be presented as posters during the final review. First Prize: $2000; second prize: $800; Honorable Mention for Creativity: $200; Award Ceremony: Thursday, Jan. 31 - 12-2pm in AVT (7-431).
