Improve your physical fitness while acquiring a basic knowledge of Arabic. This experimental course employs a strategic approach for rapid mastery and continued learning in reading, speaking and handwriting. Simple homework will be assigned. In-class fitness activities include pushups/situps, running and light stretching. All fitness levels welcome! Textbook: Alif Baa with DVDs (available from Amazon). Come dressed to run and bring pen and paper!

Egyptian Colloquial (Urban): Key Expressions

Egyptian colloquial is a version of Arabic that is known throughout the Middle East. In this session, I present some of the characteristic expressions and sayings. We will also look at some examples in the Egyptian cinema. Resources for continued study will be be discussed.

Error and Fraud in Organic Synthesis

This lecture will review several notable case histories of published research that later turned out to be erroneous. Questions that will be discussed include which cases involved "honest error" and in which was there an intention to deceive, why fraud is rare in organic synthesis, how organic chemistry is "self correcting", and steps that can be taken to minimize the publication of fraudulent work. Case histories to be described include examples from the total syntheses of natural products and methods for absolute asymmetric synthesis and C-H bond activation.

Instruction and hands-on use of tools: Blue-print reading; grind tool bits; lathe, miller, band saw, cut off saw; soft solder copper pipe; sheet metal, rolling and bending. Each Section is limited to 10 participants. Note that there are two offerings each day, 09:00 to 11:00am, and 01:00 to 03:00pm. And two sections.
Section A: January 7-11.
Section B: January 14-18.
Schedule to be determined based on participant interest.

Chemistry students have first priority.

Swimming: Quick & Easy Breast Stroke

Many recreational swimmers at MIT practice breast stroke as their swim stroke. In small groups, we will practice some simple drills that will make your breast stroke more effective and elegant. Our model will be breast stroke as practiced by world record holder Brendan Hansen.

Using Wordlists to Build Arabic Vocabulary

Building a strong, contemporary vocabulary is perhaps the most difficult task for the student of Arabic. In this session, I present some simple steps for efficiently developing Arabic vocabulary using published word lists and online media. We will look at a variety of resources and practice together.
