Physics of Rock Climbing Preview
David Custer
Wed Jan 9, 12-01:00pm, 24-619

For those interested in undertaking independent projects related to rock climbing and mountaineering. Projects might include research, testing, modeling, product design, & science journalism. This IAP activity provides the opportunity to get a head start to an undergraduate seminar (SP.255 Physics of Rock Climbing) that is being offered in the spring term. On Jan 9, expect a brief overview of avenues that might be pursued and the opportunity to do some simple research (i.e. measure the static friction coefficient between a rope and a carabiner) and discussion of how participants might pursue further work in the field. Further meetings will be arranged according to interest and the demands of the projects that participants choose to undertake.

The Salon group has been meeting regularly for over a year and is always looking for new participants and fresh ideas.
