Biking to MIT: the Fear, the Gear and the Cheer
Sheila Fay
Thu Jan 24, 12-01:00pm, 1-390

No enrollment limit, no advance sign up
Single session event

Ever been stuck in traffic on a gorgeous day and watched a bicyclist speed by you and thought – wouldn’t that be a great way to get to work? Or have you contemplated biking to work and felt intimidated by the drivers or all that spandex?

Come learn about the practicalities and realities of taking a two wheeled approach to commuting to MIT. We will cover practical issues of safe routes, what equipment you need (from the bike on up) biking skills and how to deal with carrying your clothes and getting ready to work. We will also consider the many benefits of biking to work: monetary, health and ecologic well-being.

Class will be taught by Sheila Fay, a longtime bike commuter to MIT, and a member of Watertown’s Bicycle-Pedestrian committee. Feel free to email Sheila with specific issues you'd like addressed.

Are you an apartment dweller wishing for some backyard space to compost? Don't worry, you can compost indoors and start any time of the year! In this 2-hour workshop, you will learn how to use worms to turn your garbage into "black" gold from Cambridge's Recycling Director, Randi Mail. For the past couple years, Randi has composted food scraps in two 10-gallon plastic containers, making rich soil for her houseplants.
