Focuses on drawing from observation and explores a range of non-digital media. Exercises use still life arrangements as well as the human figure, and includes gesture drawing, composition and interior perspective. Charcoal, oil pastel, India ink and acrylic paint used to develop a broad range of drawing techniques that can be applied to design studio work. Enrollment limited to 15 students.
Intended for undergraduate Course 4 majors and minors intending to take 4.113 this spring. If there is room, others will be considered. Submit your name, email address, major and minor, and whether you have preregistered for 4.113 to Annette Horne-Williams by December 11.

Second undergraduate design studio. Design within the context of structures, building technology, visual arts, computation and architectural history through several short design projects. Develop and present design solutions through the use of models, drawings, sketching and 3D computer modeling. Studio format with a combination of lectures and guided work.
What goes into the design of a building? Why do buildings look different from region to region? Who will use this building? Why is drawing not only fun, but important? The class will be exploring these questions through short design exercises.

A studio in which students develop a small number of useful design tools implemented in visual basic for Rhino. These tools will then be utilized in a short design charrette to demonstrate their functionality and the resultant designer’s empowerment. Deliverables for each student will be two fold: a simple, robust and scripted tool as well as a documented design project that utilizes this technique. The project and the student’s tools will be compiled on a course website.

Supplementary work on individual or group basis. Registration subject to prior arrangement for subject matter and supervision by staff.
Participate in the design and production of an exhibition to open at the MIT Museum Wolk Gallery on Feb. 4. Participants develop drawings, diagrams, renderings, sketches, and build large-scale models of three active architecture design projects. Deals with issues of typology, urbanism, preservation, technology, rapid prototyping, parametrics, scripting, presentation and pedagogy. The work is focused on the production of the components to be displayed and the installation of the exhibit. Work will take place at Office dA in Boston's South End (1920 Washington St #2, Boston, MA)

Work in an architect's office to gain experience, improve skills, and see the inner workings of an everyday architectural practice. Internships in all sizes of firms and in public and nonprofit agencies. Internships require full-time work for the entire IAP.
From January 4 to 29, students will work with a firm in the Boston area. Organized by the Department of Architecture, this program is open to all students in the department who have completed the prerequisite classes (U: 4.114).
Informational meeting: Tuesday, Oct. 20, 6-7 PM,7-338. Submit resume and design sheet to Prof. Fernandez by November 6.
