This workshop will focus on how to conduct a complete textual analysis project. Textual analysis is a qualitative method primarily concerned with asking the question what is the most likely interpretation of a text. To prepare, we will read Textual analysis: A beginner's guide. We will then work on a project analyzing the archive from the 2007 Alternate Reality Game World Without Oil (www.worldwithoutoil.org). To gain context for our investigation, we will talk with two of the ARG's developers, and discuss how games in particular can be analyzed. A central goal is to analyze how the ARG was utilized by its players, and what a textual analysis can tell us regarding diverse player responses.
