One definition of basic need is the minimum resources necessary for subsistence and physical well-being. While education is not essential for survival and safety, it is necessary to the socio-economic growth. Access to education is also considered a basic human right and educational aspiration is a cultural value integral to many communities. Therefore, education as a factor in the formation and growth of a community should be explored.

The class will introduce students to the state of education affecting communities. They will discuss educational issues that urban planners, policy makers, and others in positions affecting community growth should perceive and understand. Both courses will include reading, discussion, and two site visits to Boston homeless shelters.

As a vital and complex element of any urban or regional environment, transportation infrastructure both affects and is affected by land use patterns, economic development policies, political power-brokering and environmental resources, and so offers a lens through which to study many of the choices and constraints available to today's planners. This seminar will offer a practice-oriented overview of the issues, players and trends most relevant to contemporary transportation planning, as taught by two MIT/DUSP alumni/ae currently working in the field.
