This course covers the latest in the science of athletic training and performance. In the first class, we will discuss basic exercise physiology, principles of training and periodization, and motivate the need for an engineering approach to athletic training. The second class will feature methods for quantifying training data and using this data in computer models to predict performance. Case studies from world champion professional athletes will be presented. While this course is geared towards endurance sport performance, the principles apply to many other sports.

Biology, Belly Dancing and Beyond: Performance and Interactive Discussion

Melina of Daughters of Rhea (Melinda Pavlata, Ph.D.) is a second-generation belly dance artist, circus owner and aerialist, choreographer, teacher, writer, poet, mother, and -- in her former Ivory Tower life -- a scholar of Medieval French literature.

Melina will provide a history of belly dancing, followed by a performance and a interactive question answer session.

Zhentian Zhang Group and The Traditional Chinese Music Ensemble of the Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts
UPDATE: This IAP event now includes TWO performances. The first performance will be the eminent Zhentian Zhang and his group on the Dulcimer. The second performance will be by the world-renowned Traditional Chinese Music Ensemble including the ehru, bamboo flutes, zhonghu and jinhu. The audience will have a unique opportunity to experience a range traditional Chinese instruments.

Mouli Pal, our performer is a dedicated Odissi dancer who started her training in Indian classical dance . Mouli learned from the legendary Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, She considers dance a reflection of the inner spiritual spirit. A scholar will begin by providing a history of Odissi followed by Mouli’s performance and an interactive question answer session.
