A class for single malt Scotch whisky novices and those looking to enhance their knowledge of this intriguing and complex spirit! In this three-session interactive seminar, local connoisseurs will lead a sampling of a wide array of young and old single malt whiskies from the various regions of Scotland, highlighting the effects of source, distillation, and maturation. Participants will learn how to taste whisky, how to describe their perceptions, and other necessary steps to becoming knowledgeable consumers. Session 1 will cover the basics of whisky; Session 2 will discuss the production process in depth; Session 3 will cover the necessities of becoming a connoisseur.

Barakat is a Cambridge-based nonprofit that does work in Afghanistan and the region around it. Their mission is to advance literacy and to strengthen education systems in these areas. Come learn directly from representatives of Barakat about the work they have been doing and how you can take action to aid the human rights situation in Afghanistan.

For students who would like to strengthen healthy writing habits while writing their dissertation, the Dissertation Boot Camp aims to enable focused writing time, with individual support from MIT Writing and Communication Center staff and exercise breaks led by MIT Center for Health Promotion and Wellness staff. Students must supply their own laptop computers and commit to the daily writing schedule.

Enrollment priority given to students in the middle-to-final stages of writing their dissertations.
