An Entrepreneurial Approach to Wireless Mesh Networking
Brough Turner Alum
Wed Jan 27, 01-05:00pm, 56-154

No enrollment limit, no advance sign up
Single session event

We outline a new approach to ubiquitous wireless Internet connectivity, based on "Freemium" business models and next generation wireless mesh technology. Then help us flesh out plans in a series of interactive sessions that dive into the diverse technical and business issues a startup must resolve, including:

\\\* MIMO & beamforming antennas – a potentially massive performance lift.
\\\* Market opportunities in urban areas where bandwidth prices can differ by 20x-50x in buildings just a block apart.
\\\* New radios and new markets put new requirements on protocols for mesh networking and service delivery.

Our intense hands-on afternoon has one business focus but could easily foster startup ideas for several adjacent businesses.

An Entrepreneurial Approach to Wireless Mesh Networking
Dennis Baron, Brough Turner rbt@allum.mit.edu 617-285-0433
Wed Jan 27, 01-01:15am, TBD

No enrollment limit, no advance sign up

Specific topics:
1. MIMO and beamforming have a dramatic impact on the radio layer. What’s possible in next generation mesh nodes, what needs to be developed, can we leverage mass market technology?
2. New RF technology changes the focus for mesh networking protocols. How do we have to adapt mesh routing and mesh management software?
3. The Freemium model implies specific commitments to “premium” users who underwrite the free service. What service layer software is needed?
4. Is there a sustainable business model? Can it operate without depending on grants? Can it be started without VC funds?

Early work suggests the hurdles can be overcome - proposed business model is plausible. Explore - join us!

Effective March 1 and in compliance with Massachusetts regulations, MIT will have a new written information security program ("WISP"), with a focus on personal information which, if lost or stolen, will require MIT to notify the impact individuals ("PIRN"). In addition, there are other laws and regulations regarding handling a range of sensitive information. This is a non-technical session that discusses the context for data protection, what needs to be protected and why, the responsibilities for anyone handling personal information, as well as recommendations for securely handling, storing and destroying both electronic and paper records. Presentation and handouts will be available at http://web.mit.edu/infoprotect/resources.html. (This is an updated version of the 2009 IAP session)

MIT-alumni founders of ModelSheet Software present 2 apps that promise to revolutionize spreadsheets.

ModelSheet Authoring, an SaaS environment for authoring & maintaining models that:
\\* retains what’s best about spreadsheets: layout, modeling paradigm, flexible/familiar UI
\\* adds program structures to author complex models
\\* automates manual cell-level operations
\\* delivers model as spreadsheets

ModelSheet custom templates: customize spreadsheets by filling in a simple web form.
\\* specify time line, time range & multiple time grains
\\* specify number/names/hierarchy of items in a dimension
\\* include/exclude major features

While the focus will be on apps, we are prepared to discuss the advanced technology underlying ModelSheet.

Come see, and you'll agree.
