We will be offering TREX X(Travelling Research Environmental eXperiences), course 1.992 for IAP, January, 2011. This research field course is open to all course 1 students, 1E,1C,and 1A. We will be working on the west coast of the "big"island, Hawaii. The research will encompass watershed and coral reef studies. We will be working with Carolyn Stewart of the Mauna Kea Soil and Water Conservation District and watershed manager of the Waiulaula Watershed. Jonathan Stock from the USGS, Menlo Park, California will also be joining us for field research in the watershed. This is a six credit course which requires a research paper or the equivalent. The course lasts three weeks, two of fieldwork in Hawaii and one of lectures at MIT. The goal of the research this year is to determine a sediment budget for the Waiulaula watershed.
I invite you to visit the TREX website which can be reached through the CEE page and explore the nine previous trips. The 2011 version of TREX leaves Boston, January 11th (leaving in the morning and arriving at 9 at night) and returns January 25th, 2011 (leaving late at night)and arriving in Boston Jan 26th at 3:45PM. The course and trip is subsidized by the department. The cost to each student for the two weeks in Hawaii is $500.

This course will introduce concepts of monitoring Web traffic and running a Internet based campaign as a leadership techniques. Techniques of targeting specific user groups and monitoring their traffic will be demonstrated. Many surveys indicate that U.S. citizens are inclined to be optimistic. However, over the past several years, U.S. citizen confidence in their leaders steadily decreased; to counterbalance this not-so-uplifting statement, among other fascinating statistics, the National Leadership Index (hereinafter, “NLI”) revealed that approximately 40% of U.S. citizens believed that the state of the nation would improve after the 2008 election. Thus, it is particularly important to not only collect the analytics regarding the interest by U.S. citizens in downloading this NLI report, but also to be able to conduct a meaningful temporal spatial analysis for the purposes of validating the manual polling results and website traffic analytics as well as to obtain a better understanding of the pathway by which the Internet popularity of the report gained momentum.
This course is targeted to students in the Geospatial Data Center and will be run in London. Travel to London for a five day workshop, four hours of lectures, 20 hours project and a six hour presentation.
