Authentic Movement was developed by dance movement therapist, Mary Starks Whitehouse in the1950's. She was influenced by Carl Jung's experiments with "active imagination", the ability to make unconscious material conscious through some creative process. By applying these ideas to movement, she found that we have tremendous ability to access, explore & express the wisdom in our bodies.

This practice is done with attention directed inward, eyes closed, with no music, although sounds may arise from your internal impulse. You move in the presence of a witness. This non-judgmental, compassionate witness helps support you in nurturing your own inner witness, distinct from the highly developed inner critic. You listen to your own desires and impulses, free from the constraints of shoulds and have-to’s. There is no prescribed movement. It can include anything from complete stillness to vigorous movement through space. Through following your own internal impulse to move or be still, you will be led on an amazing journey.

"The body is the physical aspect of the personality and movement is the personality made visible."
- Mary Starks Whitehouse

Movement is essential to the developing brains of infants. Research shows that we are never too old to create new connections in the brain. Awareness Through Movement lessons are verbally guided movement sequences which help to clarify fundamental biological movement patterns and bring us closer to potential. By slowing down, reducing your effort, and becoming aware of your habits in movement, more of your whole self becomes involved in every action. Previously unseen possibilities become available. Your system becomes more efficient and free to move with ease and spontaneity. Class is appropriate for all levels
of experience and ability.

Join experienced Yoga Instructor Checka Antifonario for 4 two-hour workshops designed to help you expand your practice in a focused manner. All levels are welcome; some basic experience with yoga is recommended for the greatest benefit. Each week will include a full-body yoga flow designed to lead to specific depth and focus on one area of your yoga practice. Week one will focus on finding ease and fluidity in backbending postures. Week two will explore the detoxifying and re-energizing aspects of vigorous yoga and deep twisting postures. Week three will support you in feeling comfortable, safe and strong in practicing arm balances and inversions. Week four will address four equally important limbs of yoga, using breathwork (pranayama) and physical postures (asana) as preparation for yogic focus (dharana) and meditation (dhyana).
