This is a basic course in fundamentals of target shooting. This class is designed for a beginner or novice archer and uses recurve indoor target bows and equipment. Ballroom Dance

The course will introduce the basics of 4-6 popular ballroom dances including three smooth dances: Foxtrot, Waltz and Tango; and three Latin or rhythm dances: Swing, Cha Cha and Rumba. In each dance the participants will learn several patterns which will give them some basic variety and allow them to maneuver the dance floor. Lead and follow will be taught as well.

Beginning Kyudo Instruction: First Shot

Kyudo, or Japanese archery, means the "way of the bow" and was considered the highest discipline of ancient Japanese samurai. Kyudo is based on standing Zen meditation used by Zen Buddhist monks as a means of cultivating self-awareness. Beginners will receive instruction in the basic form of kyudo, the Seven Coordinations or "shichi-do," and shoot at a short-range target.

Beginning Swimming

This class is for those who are at ease in shallow water but are not safe in deep water and is designed to teach the non-swimmer the basics of swimming. There will be instruction on floating, gliding, kicking and elementary backstroke. Front crawl stroke will be introduced. Most instruction, particularly in the beginning, takes place in the shallow pool and later may progress to the deep pool as individuals progress.

An introduction to the American Jiu-Jitsu System of Self-Defense. American Jiu Jitsu consists of Japanese-style Jujutsu, Filipino Stick Fighting, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Muay Thai and American Kickboxing, as well as Military and Police defensive tactics. The MIT American Jiu Jitsu Club practices practical self-defense, with an emphasis on building well-rounded, strong, intelligent martial artists.

This course is for beginners, and is intended for individuals serious about developing long-term self-defense skills, and who are willing to challenge themselves in a fun, friendly environment. Students are encouraged to continue their study, in order to attain rank with the American Jiu Jitsu Federation, during the Spring semester.

Shotokan Karate is a classic Japanese martial art, with a focus on completely mastering a set of straightforward and offense-oriented moves. Practicing karate is an excellent way to stay in shape over the winter, as well as improve your balance, reflexes and flexibility.

By the end of this IAP course, complete beginners will have learned enough to test for a yellow belt. We will cover all basic blocks, kicks and stances as well as several kata. As your technique progresses, we will introduce basic sparring routines and move towards free sparring.

The MIT Shotokan Karate club was founded in 1974. It is a member of the New England Collegiate Karate Conference (NECKC), led by Grandmaster Kazumi Tabata, 8th dan.

The MIT Outing Club's Winter School is an introduction to self-propelled wilderness winter sports. Taught over IAP since 1971, Winter School covers topics applicable to daytrips, winter camping, and winter mountaineering, including food and clothing; snowshoes, crampons, cross country and backcountry skiing, ice climbing and more. All levels of experience are welcome! Many smaller (10 people max) trips are run to the White Mountains every weekend. Weekend trips are optional, but by far the best part of Winter School! Equipment is available for rent from MITOC; participants will need appropriate clothing (to be discussed in lectures). Those going on trips will need to share cost of gas & upkeep with drivers, as well as pay any trail fees in National Forests. Attendance at the first two lectures (Jan 4th and 6th) is required to participate in any of the weekend trips! All lectures will be held in 35-225.

PE Dance - Tango Class

This is the original form of tango that developed in Argentina in the early 20th century. It is characterized by elegant leg movements, in combination with a still and quiet upper body. Argentine tango is an improvisational dance in the sense that dancers themselves link the elements, thus creating their unique dance through the connection between leader and follower. The focus of the class is on proper walking technique, posture, and figures that will enable the students to enjoy tango dance events (milongas). The class is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced dancers who wish to perfect the basics.

Hiphop embodies a large genre of dance that includes freestyle, specific body part isolations, and breaking. This high-energy hiphop class is designed to improve cardiovascular strength while learning innovative ways to move your body to music. A short warm up consisting of stretching and body isolations will be followed by a combination that contains elements of a specific hiphop style. Combinations will be broken down to focus on the energy, musicality, and style of the movement.

Israeli folk dance is a fun, ever-evolving form that draws movement and music styles from all over and mashes them into something unique. In this introductory course we'll learn to dance to a mixture of traditional Israeli folk and modern Israeli pop music, all influenced by musical styles from many countries in Europe, the Middle East, and North and South America. Students will learn the basic steps that recur in many dances, and will also learn the three major dance forms: circle, line and partner dances.

This class teaches the basic techniques and fundamentals of kicking and punching; half cardiovascular exercises and half interval training. Class focuses on dynamic movement, isolated limbic movement, muscle strengthening, overall conditioning, agility and reaction, stretching, sit-ups, and push-ups for a high intensity fast paced workout. No previous experience necessary; for both men and women.

This course is designed for students who have never danced Salsa before or for those who know the basics and would like to improve their skills. Together, we will cover the key aspects of Salsa dancing, including the history and structure of the music and dance, as well as the fundamental Salsa dancing skills, including individual footwork, partnering skills, and body movement and styling. The end goal is for students to gain a holistic understanding of Salsa dancing in order to appreciate the dance form and to be able to dance with enjoyment and confidence.

For beginners with little to no experience in swing dance or for experienced dancers looking to perfect the basics, this course focuses on Lindy Hop: an energetic partner dance developed during the 1920's Harlem Renaissance. You will become comfortable with basic steps and footwork for 6-count and 8-count patterns, and will learn turns, lindy circles, swing-outs, charlestons, and other moves. Instruction focuses on the dynamics of the dance, musicality, and building a good frame and lead/follow connection with a partner. Learning swing will boost your confidence, balance, and coordination while giving you a good workout and putting a smile on your face. The goal is for you to complete the course feeling comfortable and confident on the dance floor.

Building on basic concepts and connection between partners, we'll add in this class some new fancy moves that are suitable for social dancing (milongas). The leaders will practice their navigation skills and learn how to creatively combine elements by switching systems and sides of embrace. Underwater hockey (UWH) is a fun and fast water sport, it is unlike anything else you have ever played. UWH is played at the bottom of a swimming pool: you have to go down and hold your breath. It is played with a short stick that is used to push and shoot a heavy puck. Each team has 6 players.

The course has four sessions. People who attend multiple sessions will get new challenging material. For first time attendants, regardless of when you come, you will get a full basic crash course of introduction to the game together with other first time attendants after which you are invited to participate with everybody else.

You will learn:

-apnea (freediving) skills

-to get comfortable underwater
-to improve how long you can stay underwater

-snorkeling skills (if needed)

-swimming with fins

-breathing skills
-clearing a mask

-stick and puck handling skills

-swimming position with puck
-agility skills with the puck
-passing (sliding and shooting the puck)

-playing a game of underwater hockey

-explained of all the basic rules
-team tactics

The female only swim course will run in January 2011.

This class is for those who are at ease in shallow water but are not safe in deep water and is designed to teach the non-swimmer the basics of swimming. There will be instruction on floating, gliding, kicking and elementary backstroke. Front crawl stroke will be introduced. Most instruction, particularly in the beginning, takes place in the shallow pool and later may progress to the deep pool as individuals progress.
