Starting with raw lumber, students will prepare a solid or semi-hollow body blank using a system of router templates, transforming the blank into a completed body ready for finishing. Class fee of $50 will cover shop materials and a copy of Make Your Own Electric Guitar by M. Hiscock. Students will individually purchase all other materials and components. Costs will vary; typical minimum cost ~ $350 for a basic Telecaster or Precision Bass. No prior skills are needed for this class. 3 hours shop time each week besides class will be needed to complete the instrument. REGISTRATION ON A FIRST PAID BASIS.

No enrollment limit, no advance sign up
Repeating event. Participants welcome at any session

ATS is proud to host the new MIT Chinese Yo-Yo Club's IAP workshop series. Come learn the Chinese yo-yo!

Participants of all skill levels (from never touching a yoyo to knowing lots of tricks) are welcome.

Having roots from the 12th century, the Chinese yo-yo spins on a string connected by two sticks. Unlike its Western counterpart, the Chinese yo-yo is not connected to the string, allowing more complicated tricks to be performed.

The sessions will meet 4pm-6pm in the Student Center, room 407.

Ever wanted to talk to people in foreign countries without any delay? Does finding a real-life use for your 8.02 skills appeal to you? Do you wish you could coordinate with many friends at the same time at an event? Bouncing your voice off the moon so it can be heard half way around the world sounds like fun? All it takes for a license to do this and more is a short exam which any MIT student should be able to pass without much effort. We'll teach you the extra bits you don't already know and then take you to an official exam session on campus resulting in a license from the FCC. See http://w1mx.mit.edu/ham-exams for a list of what to bring, no registration required.

Learn the centuries-old technique of making decorative papers with paste, paint, and paper in the MIT Libraries' Wunsch Conservation Laboratory. Paste papers are made by covering a dampened sheet of paper with a mixture of paste and colored pigment and then working the surface with a variety of tools to create patterns. Originally used by bookbinders for covering material and endpapers, paste papers today are used for notecards, collage, scrapbooking, giftwrapping, and other paper arts.

Participants will learn about the history of paste paper, see a demonstration and examples, and have an opportunity to try their hand at the craft. Each participant will make 2 or more sheets of paste paper, which will be dried overnight in the Lab and then mailed. All materials will be provided.

Directions to the Wunsch Conservation Lab: http://libraries.mit.edu/preservation/aboutus.html
No walk-ins allowed. Please contact us if you find you cannot attend, as there is likely to be a waiting list.

To view examples of paste paper, search for “paste paper” in Google Images.
