This course is an multidisciplinary overview of the major lines of interpretations about society in Brazil from independence in the nineteenth century to the present. In the past and till recently race and nation have always been major categories in the cultural, political and scientific discourses of Brazilian national identity. Historians, writers, medical doctors, politicians, plastic artists, film directors helped to shape as well as to deconstruct the official history of the country and its racialized hegemonic discourse.

Particular attention will be paid to the way images from the historical record are circulated among peoples in different times and places and how they affect social changes.

This course is divided into two major parts I, II and subdivided into 7 modules. Readings should be done before the class scheduled in the syllabus. Some films and documentaries will be shown in class as it is listed. However, some will have to be viewed outside of class.
