Building East Asian Musical Instruments

Participants welcome at individual sessions (series)

The Chinese Erhu and Japanese Shamisen are traditional stringed instruments originating hundreds of years ago. Brian Chan will show how to construct basic versions of these instruments, and talk about more advanced projects, such as his super-portable folding instruments. Attendees will have the option to join the Hobby Shop and start their own instrument projects to be finished later in the semester, or just to listen and watch.

East Asian Instruments and the MIT Hobby Shop

Attendees will be able to see, hear, and handle some of the instruments built in the Hobby Shop, and have a walk-through of the Hobby Shop to learn the safety and functions of the various woodworking and metalworking machines which will later be used to create instruments.

Planning out a Musical Instrument Project (East Asian instrument workshop)

Attendees will decide which instrument they would like to build, and learn how to draw a basic blueprint to guide the construction of the instrument. Students will decide which materials and parts to purchase. Listeners are welcome to watch.
