Single session event
Prereq: linear algebra
Optimization and decision problems are ubiquitous in all areas of engineering design as well as management science. Many majors including ME, EE, CS, CEE and others use tools for optimization very routinely. In this review session, we will skim through some (very very few but strikingly) important results in this area. After that, we will focus on how to get optimization formulations of typical applied/engineering problems. Finally, we will look at a couple of popular free tools which can be used to solve the formulations.
It is a good place for students who have already taken a first course in optimization to refresh their memories. It will also be a good place for students who want to taste what optimization theory is all about.
Prerequisites: Linear algebra (concept of linear independence, bases, matrix inversion), Calculus (multivariate, minimum/maximum). The review will be as self-contained as possible.
