Conflict Resolution @ MIT announces the dates for January/IAP 2013 mediation training.  This comprehensive training teaches participants how to conduct mediations, basic mediation skills, mediation ethics, and meets Massachusetts requirements for mediation training.  Applications are currently available at the website below and are due by January 7, 2013.  

Please note that priority is given to early applications.  The training is free to MIT students.  A $100 fee is charged for those with other connections to MIT.

What makes a superhero a superhero? What superhero can you identify with most and why?

Superheroes represent qualities we appreciate and capabilities we long to have. But beyond all their abilities, outfits and characteristics we admire our superheroes’ attitudes to challenges. In comparison to them, most of us play small and don’t allow ourselves to fulfill our wishes and goals. Unfortunately, most of us even create our own small “Supervillains” as inner voices telling us to stay where we are and not to even dare reaching our full potentials. These so called "Saboteurs" are the source of our inner voice that demotivates, discourages and distracts us from what we really want and wish for in our lives and carriers. The good news is: We all have someone who can battle our Saboteurs - our inner Superhero! As this course will teach you, we can create and awake an inner voice that represents what we want to stand for. But before we can challenge our Saboteur with our Superhero we first need to identify, explore and awake it.

In this IAP courses “Awaken Your Inner Superhero” Dr. Konstantin Mitgutsch from the MIT Game Lab combines recent research findings into transformative learning with tools and practices from life coaching and visualization technics. The participants learn to identify the essential underlying qualities of their inner superhero and explore ways to transfer their “super skills” into their private and professional lives.

First Year Experience Winter Retreat: Thrive @ MIT

Academics, new friends, life in the residence halls, extracurricular activities, and a social life: how do you balance it all at MIT? Join fellow first-year students, staff and faculty for a chance to step back and reflect on your experience at MIT thus far through an overnight winter retreat. Buses will leave MIT at 3pm Friday January 25th and return at approximately 4pm on Saturday January 26th. The location of the retreat will be at the Warren Conference Center in Ashland, MA.

This participatory workshop offers a process model for negotiation that focuses on reaching better, more sustainable agreements while preserving important relationships. In this workshop you will:
- See negotiation principles in action during various interactive exercises
- Learn the basics of the Mutual Gains Approach
- Test the skills you've learned in a simulated negotiation 

The Mutual Gains Approach to negotiation is a process model, based on hundreds of real-world cases & experimental findings, that lays out four steps for negotiating better outcomes while protecting relationships and reputation. This framework can be used to improve outcomes in any situation, from academic or professional negotiations, to difficult conversations with friends & family. Everyone is welcome, no negotiation expertise required.

The tools & theory in this workshop are based on work done by the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, as well as the Consensus Building Institute. The Program on Negotiation is an inter-university consortium committed to advancing the theory & practice of negotiation and dispute resolution. The Consensus Building Institute is a not-for-profit consulting organization located in Kendall Square dedicated to empowering people to negotiate and collaborate more effectively using our Mutual Gains Approach.

MIT LeaderShape is a six day intensive leadership conference that takes place over IAP, where you not only build upon leadership skills, but share with and get to know others on a deeper, more personal level. Participants will be asked to wrestle with challenging topics such as professional ethics, dealing with uncertainty, working within a diverse community while developing skills in areas of problem solving and interpersonal communication. Over the course of the program, students will develop a community among their peers, facilitated by MIT faculty and staff cluster leaders and student veterans of the program. Although it is not an expectation of the program to share personal stories and/or insights, it is an expecation that you will participate in the full experience.
