Free Figure Skating and Ice Dance Classes

We provide several levels of instruction ranging from basic stroking to more advanced jumps and spins. Improve your skating and learn new moves and jumps in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere - for free! Freestyle lessons are from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., and Ice Dance lessons are from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.  You don't need a partner and you don't need to know anything about ice dancing to take ice dance lessons. Beginners are welcome! There will also be a special group lesson for those who have never before skated from 10am - 10:45am.

This activity is open to members of the MIT community who are eligible to participate in club sports (see http://web.mit.edu/clubsports/athletes/eligibility.shtml

Lessons will start promptly at 9:30am.  You are welcome to come earlier to skate and warm up.  For those renting skates (available for a fee), you should plan to arrive no later than 9:15am.  Figure skates required.  Hockey skates not permitted.

Hatha yoga is designed for beginners as well as the more experienced yoga student.  Through the process of breathing techniques, holding different poses, and meditation, you will experience the many benefits of yoga.

Jacqueline Rossi has been teaching yoga in the Boston area for the past 12 years.  Currently, she teaches at MIT, Northeastern, Golds Gym, and works one on one with private students.

The class will meet in the evening on Monday, January 13th, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in room 16-220.

IAP Shotokan Karate through Yellow Belt Course

Our special IAP course, Shotokan through Yellow Belt, is an intensive course designed to introduce new students to Shotokan Karate to the level of yellow belt in one month. No experience is required, just the desire to learn martial arts! Alongside the Yellow Belt course, we will also have advanced individual training for current students and new students with extensive prior experience. Club Practices start on Monday, January 6th. Please note that for Shotokan through Yellow Belt, we strongly recommend attending at least 75% of classes over IAP. The course is designed to learn unique new material every class, and it will be much harder to follow along without attending as many classes as possible.

Contra dancing is a high-energy American folk dance, using easy walking steps, set to exciting, LIVE folk music from New England, Ireland, and Quebec. Dance with a partner and other couples, then change partners. A caller teaches the sequence of moves and prompts you during the dance, making it accessible to all. No experience necessary!

Want to learn and practice principles of self-defense in a safe and fun environment? Want to strengthen your mind and get an awesome workout? Then come learn the intense movements of Kung Fu and the balanced techniques of Tai Chi. Kung Fu utilizes striking moves with kicks, punches, and blocks.  Tai Chi, also known as "meditation in motion", utilizes fluid movements coupled with deep breathing techniques to achieve maximum defense. Both are key components of Chinese Martial Arts, and will teach you different tactics on how to approach your opponent's moves.

Kyudo, or Japanese archery, means the "way of the bow" and was considered the highest discipline of ancient Japanese samurai. Kyudo is based on standing Zen meditation used by Zen Buddhist monks as a means of cultivating self-awareness. Beginners will receive instruction in the basic form of kyudo, the Seven Coordinations or "shichi-do," and shoot at a short-range target.

MIT Outing Club Winter School

Winter School is MIT Outing Club's crash course in cold weather wilderness activities. Taught over IAP since 1971, the goal of Winter School is to teach the skills one needs to enjoy outdoor sports safely in the winter. Participants attend lectures every Tuesday and Thursday evening and spend time outdoors during the weekends. Trips are offered at various levels of intensity and include hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, back-country skiing, ice climbing, winter camping, orienteering, and mountaineering.  Specifically, lecture topics cover essential food and clothing selection as well as the use of technical gear for hiking (snowshoes+crampons), cross country and backcountry skiing, ice climbing and more.

All levels of experience are welcome! Many smaller (10 people max) trips are run to the White Mountains every weekend by our experienced winter trip leaders. Weekend trips are optional, but by far the best part of Winter School! Equipment is available for rent from MITOC; participants will need to provide appropriate clothing (to be discussed in lectures). Those going on trips will need to share cost of gas & upkeep with drivers, as well as a nominal trip fee (covers trail fee for National Forest use). Attendance at the first two lectures (Jan 7th and 9th) is REQUIRED to participate in any of the weekend trips! The first two lectures will be in room 34-101. All subsequent lectures (Jan 14, 16, 21, 23, 28, and 30) will be in room 35-225.

Broomball is for everyone - floor hockey on ice or hockey WITHOUT skates. PE Dance - Tango Class

This is the original form of tango that developed in Argentina in the early 20th century. It has elegant leg movements, combined with a still and quiet upper body. It is an improvisational dance in that dancers themselves link the elements, thus creating their unique dance through the connection between leader and follower. Class covers proper walking technique, posture, and figures that will enable the students to enjoy tango dance events (milongas). Beginners and experienced dancers welcomed. Hip hop embodies a large genre of dance that includes freestyle, specific body part isolations, and breaking. This high-energy hip hop class is designed to improve cardiovascular strength while learning innovative ways to move your body to music. A short warm up consisting of stretching and body isolations will be followed by a combination that contains elements of a specific hip hop style. As a non-contact sport that combines elements from football and soccer, ultimate frisbee is seen all over college campuses. Interested in learning how to play? Almost everybody comes to sMITe never having played before. During our indoor winter practices we'll teach the basics of ultimate frisbee such as throwing, cutting, horizontal and vertical stacks, and forces.
