This course is designed for the individual who is hesitant and uncomfortable in water. It will provide support, guidance, and patience to help you to overcome your fear and truly enjoy the water. We will work on how to move safely through the water, how to submerge our heads under the water, how to gently drift into a floating position, and how to move from a horizontal float to a standing position. The class will have a maximum of 5 participants to ensure safety and comfort. Pre-requisite: Needs to be willing to stand in 4 feet of water and get face wet. This course is challenging, fun and guaranteed to bring your swimming to a new level, whether you are a recreational swimmer or preparing for the Navy SEAL Physical Screening Test (PST).  The workout consists of drills and swim sets that will progressively develop the swimmers' mastery of combat side stroke, body dolphin and freestyle.  Each workout will end with a short dry-land training session on the deck (sit-ups, pushups, stretching).

Bluewater Sailing Shore School

Have you dreamed about chartering a cruising sailboat in some far-off location?  Do you want to give offshore (bluewater) sailing a try?  Even if you just want to be one of those annoying people who point out the 10 things that Robert Redford did wrong in “All is Lost”, this shore school is for you.  This course is designed as an introduction to offshore cruising and racing for sailors.  The seven lectures will cover the basic knowledge necessary for safe and efficient offshore sailing.  There are no prerequisites for this course, but some previous sailing experience is desirable.

This course is excellent preparation for bluewater sailing aboard MIT's cruising boat "X Dimension".

Life Aboard

Seamanship and Safety

In this session we will address the skills, practices and attitudes that contribute to safe and enjoyable offshore sailing. We will discuss the practical aspects of crew and boat safety, including boat handling, sailing in various conditions, emergency situations, communications, crew responsibilities, watch schedules and more. We will end with a discussion of case studies (and perhaps a recent movie).

Navigation

The principles of ocean navigation will be covered in this session.  We discuss coordinate systems and ocean chart types then inshore aids to navigation and tides and currents.  We will then describe the basics of navigational technique, including dead reckoning, and chart work.  We will finish with a discussion of GPS and celestial navigation for ocean passages.

PE Dance - Tango Class

This is the original form of tango that developed in Argentina in the early 20th century. It has elegant leg movements, combined with a still and quiet upper body. It is an improvisational dance in that dancers themselves link the elements, thus creating their unique dance through the connection between leader and follower. Class covers proper walking technique, posture, and figures that will enable the students to enjoy tango dance events (milongas). Beginners and experienced dancers welcomed. PE Weight Training Class

Designed for the beginning or novice weight lifter, or for those who have experience lifting but lack proper instruction. Students will understand the biomechanics involved, muscles used for a given exercise, and program development. Proper techniques of lifting and spotting covered. Students will also be provided information for putting together individual workout programs. Proper gym etiquette is taught and expected. Multiple sections available. This course supports women interested in participating in regular low-intensity exercise during their pregnancy. The class will provide a comfortable social and low impact environment for the mother-to-be. Water resistance will be used for arm and leg movements in chest-deep water and deep water. SCUBA Class

In this class students will learn the practical skills to be a safe open-water SCUBA diver. Class is split into two parts; the why and how of SCUBA diving which involves classroom and pool training. Upon completion of the course students will receive a voucher for the open water dives and certification with SCUBA Schools International (SSI) certification.
