What we do: Ring tower bells in permutations (n!), like Paul Revere (and a bunch of English people) at Old North Church and Church of the Advent in Boston. Learn change-ringing, the traditional British style of ringing bells. We follow mathematical patterns instead of sheet music to ring up to 8 large tower bells with each bell controlled by a single rope.
Change ringing = Combinatorics + Music. Those changes in the order of the bells’ sounding that constitute a method are governed by 4 rules: (a) no bell may move more than one position at each change/row; (b) each bell sounds once in each row; (c) no row is repeated; and (d) the ringing begins and ends in Rounds.
Curious? Learn more on our group website, under the "Ring with Us" section: http://bellringers.scripts.mit.edu/www/, or just come on out and join us!
Please wear comfortable, warm clothes. No previous musical experience necessary. IAP is a great time for first-time learners! We often go out to eat after practice, and you are welcome to join us. The Guild of Bellringers is a secular organization. All are welcome.
Meet in Building 66, Green Building side, at the designated times (or let us know if you'll be there a little later, so we can wait for you.) T-fare to the tower is provided.

Session 1: Students will be issued a design challenge to create a coat of arms that represents their college experience. The groups will have to agree on a design and then assign construction tasks. A basic demonstration of hand building techniques will be presented at the beginning of the first class, as well as a discussion of the general nature and physical properties of clay.
Session 2: Discussion of the the chemistry of glazing, underglazing and chemical washes and the way that each react with cone 6 clay bodies in the kiln. Groups will have to agree on and divide up glazing responsibilities. At the end of session two, if time permits, the instructor will give a wheelthrowing demonstration and students will be allowed to experiment on the potters wheels.
Session 3: Finished pieces are out of the kilns and ready for group critique, after which they can be taken home. If time permits, students will be allowed to continue to experiment on the wheel and with handbuilding on the tables.

Now in its seventh year, this popular class continues to build on the long-standing tradition of instrument building in the Hobby Shop. Making full use of the Shop’s many tools, including the CNC router, students will build, finish and assemble their own solid-body, bolt-on neck electric guitar or bass.
The types of instruments available to choose from include Stratocaster and Telecaster-style guitars and a Precision-style bass. The first step in the process is a required meeting with the instructor in December to select instrument type, body and other parameters. The result will be a bill of materials that each student must order and have delivered prior to the beginning of class. The cost of these parts will depend on the components selected with the lower end of the range (for good quality parts) of:
Stratocaster-style guitar, $350
Telecaster style guitar, $325
Precision-style bass, $300
When the workshop begins, students will transform a prepared blank into a completed body, ready to accept the production-made neck and other components.

This six day intensive workshop is designed to introduce students to the beautiful and versatile world of gum bichromate printing. One of the earliest photographic printing processes, gum printing utilizes a contact negative to produce delicate, painterly images that use watercolor paint as the pigment in their emulsions. The basic process is simple and fun. It is a great way to transform your digital or film images into permanent works of art.
Class will cover all aspects of the gum process: paper preparation, negative preparation and printing. Students should bring three to five images or a selection of digital image files to the first class.

If you ever wanted to know the link between knitting and programming this is the workshop for you. A knitting pattern is actually a more or less complex algorithm with the difference being that the output is directly wearable like 3D printing. The 1st day we will review fundamentals, learn basics and start a small project (hat, scarf or bag depending on skills), and the 2nd day we will work on the project. Students will have to get their own supplies but can contact the instructor for help in type/quantities of wool and needles.

Cooking is one of the most fascinating (and rewarding!) applications of science and engineering. Indeed, few people realize that even the easiest recipe requires a working knowledge of important scientific principles spanning the fields of Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science and many more. The goal of this course is to show this connection between cooking and science. This course is designed to be a fun, hands-on experience in which students learn basic scientific principles by performing simple experiments with food. The first three lectures will cover ice-cream making, chocolate tasting, naked eggs and other fun activities. The instructor will draw connections between the concepts presented and his everyday scientific research in Materials Science. A tour of the Taza Chocolate factory is an optional encouraged activity to supplement the session on chocolate.

The LineStorm Animation Digital FlipBook Project rekindles the thrill of discovery in the basics of animation. We create the moments in time and space when one image changes into the next, when animation happens. LineStorm concentrates on three fundamental phases of animation: (1) the intellectual phase, when animators consider the range of possibilities in developing frame-by-frame visuals; (2) the practical production phase, when we create the actual imagery; (3) the wrap-up phase, when animators wrestle with timelines, pipelines and deadlines to complete the project. We’ll have a great time exploring, through hands-on exercises, a wide array of animation tools and skills as we build a group hand-drawn animation project (topic to be decided) to which everyone will contribute sequences. The LineStorm approach works wonders: past projects in this class have won First Prize at the Cambridge Science Festival and at the Made-at-M.I.T. Media Spectacle! We’ll upload our final project to YouTube for the entire MIT community to enjoy.

Calling all creative writers! Want to write something creative but need some motivation or support? Join other MIT writers to get advice about your own writing, to be a reader of other writers' work, and/or to get inspiration to write something. Any type of creative writing is welcomed: e.g., fiction, poetry, literary nonfiction, memoirs, personal essays, plays, blog entries, book reviews. We help each other get started on a creative writing project, we help each other develop ideas and style, we function as engaged and encouraging readers of each other's material. The Group includes emerging and established writers. We meet every Monday from noon-1:00 p.m. in E39-335 (the same building that hosues Rebecca's Cafe in Kendall Square). This short, immersive and interdisciplinary course teaches key principles of design, zero waste production and digital fabrication through focused exploration of formal opportunities provided by kerfing--selective, subtractive cuts. In the traditional kerfing process, practiced in the design of medieval wood musical instruments, flat boards and wood sheets are bent into curved forms by selectively extracting material from one side. Today, computation and parametric constraints may be applied to this process to create curved, structural beams or “bents” with very little material waste.
The MIT Soft Rocker, an outdoor rocking lounge, will be the departure point for a short, two-week design problem. Teams of two students will imagine, design, and fabricate multi-curved chassis forms for the Soft Rocker that are capable of supporting the weight of the team. As simple as the Soft Rocker seems, it embodies sophisticated design and structural challenges of centroidal stasis, balance, dynamic loading, and the definition of interdisciplinary principles of elegance in design, structure, and fabrication. Students will learn design and fabrication concepts with the potential to greatly expand the formal range, design applications and mass-customization of contemporary low-carbon wood construction. The class will utilize a Techno- Isel CNC router, located at the KVA Matx studio, where all necessary supplies, soft wood materials and tools will be provided. Join us!
