Learn to blues dance! Blues dance is a partnered social dance done to blues music, with strong emphasis on connection, musicality, and improvisation. This class is open to beginners, no previous dance experience required, and you do not need to come with a partner. After the lesson will be an open dance for practice.

We provide several levels of instruction ranging from basic stroking to more advanced jumps and spins. Improve your skating and learn new moves and jumps in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere - for free! Freestyle lessons are from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., and Ice Dance lessons are from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. You don't need a partner and you don't need to know anything about ice dancing to take ice dance lessons. Beginners are welcome! There will be a group lesson for those who have never skated before from 10am - 10:45am.
This activity is open to members of the MIT community who are eligible to participate in club sports (see http://clubsports.mit.edu/about/eligibility/)
Lessons will start promptly at 9:30am. You are welcome to come earlier to skate and warm up. For those renting skates, you should plan to arrive no later than 9:15am. Rental skates will be available for $5/session.

Get ready for Super Bowl Sunday by joining an open discussion on the place of football in America’s past and present. The session draws its title from an essay by Steve Almond published in the New York Times on January 24, 2014, available online or through the MIT Libraries. Kyudo, or Japanese archery, means the "way of the bow" and was considered the highest discipline of ancient Japanese samurai. Kyudo is based on standing Zen meditation used by Zen Buddhist monks as a means of cultivating self-awareness. Beginners will receive instruction in the basic form of kyudo. Training will take place on the first day, followed by actual shooting on the second day. People are required to come on Saturday to be trained in order to shoot on Sunday.

Physical Education offers courses designed for undergraduate students to complete the 8 point General Institute Requirement and swim requirement. There are over 40 types of courses including: aquatics, dance, individual sports, team sports, fitness, health and wellness, and outdoor education.
Courses meet twice a week for 60 minutes for 4 weeks during IAP, January 5-January 29. Participants must attend first class to secure spot.
Registration for PE is online first come, first serve. Undergraduate registration begins December 3 at 8am and graduate registration begins December 8 at 8am. Registration for all closes Wednesday, December 10 at 1p. Non-students can submit a request to register and will be added to courses if space is available. Note that non-students must have DAPER membership during 4 weeks and pay $75 course fee.

Have you dreamed about chartering a cruising sailboat in some far-off location? Do you want to give offshore (bluewater) sailing a try? Even if you just want to be one of those annoying people who point out the 10 things that Robert Redford did wrong in “All is Lost”, this shore school is for you. This course is designed as an introduction to offshore cruising and racing for sailors. The seven lectures will cover the basic knowledge necessary for safe and efficient offshore sailing. There are no prerequisites for this course, but some previous sailing experience is desirable.
This course is excellent preparation for bluewater sailing aboard MIT's cruising boat "X Dimension".

The principles of ocean navigation will be covered in this session. We discuss coordinate systems and ocean chart types then inshore aids to navigation and tides and currents. We will then describe the basics of navigational technique, including dead reckoning, and chart work. We will finish with a discussion of GPS and celestial navigation for ocean passages.

"Shotokan through Yellow Belt" is an intensive course designed to introduce new students to Shotokan Karate by giving them the skills to reach yellow belt in one month. The course is $45, with the first week free as a trial, and will include a free uniform, tournament quality sparring gear, and our club T-shirt. We welcome people of all levels to try two powerful martial arts. Taichi, often perceived as slow and an activity elderly do, actually originated as an ancient war technique. You can learn how to use taichi to use your opponent's qi (energy) against them. Kung Fu is an efficient martial art such that you block yourself and either kick or punch simultaneously. You do not waste any moves. These martial art series are taught by instructor Huan Zhang of Huan's Taichi who has over 25 years of experiencing in teaching both disciplines. Lessons are free, so take advantage of it!!
