Teaching Pronunciation to Non-Native Speakers of English

Eric Grunwald, Lecturer in English Language Studies

Jan/21 Thu 12:00PM-02:00PM 56-180

Enrollment: Unlimited: No advance sign-up

Although they may have a good grasp of English grammar and vocabulary, many non-native speakers still struggle to be understood when speaking. As teachers, our first instinct is to teach them proper pronunciation—that is, the proper enunciation of particular sounds—but just as or even more important are proper stress and intonation within words and thought groups. Much information in English is conveyed through these other aspects of spoken English, and without instruction in these areas, non-native speakers often remain poorly understood even with good pronunciation. This 90-minute workshop will teach strategies for building awareness of all three elements in students as well as for their practice of them. Sample exercises and handouts will be provided.
