Adult Beginning Swim

This course will break down the coordination, flexibility, timing, and power of the freestyle stroke to help swimmers learn good form and increase overall efficiency. Drills that teach proper posture, bodyline, and balance will be used to create the desired fluid motion when moving through the water. Pre-requisite: Participants should be able to swim 50 yards of freestyle continuously and should be comfortable in deep water.

Boxing conditioning is the total package giving you both a cardiovascular and strength workout in one class. This class covers proper technique and footwork as it relates to boxing. Conditioning drills would enhance speed, agility, quickness, and cardio endurance to improve one's boxing skills.

Efficient Swimming

This event is a time based indoor triathlon. Athletes (beginners and advanced) will see how far they can swim in 15 minutes, bike in 25 minutes, and run in 20 minutes. Between each discipline participants will be given a 5 minute transition period, total time of 70 minutes. Heats will be assigned for athletes at a later date. This is a great event for individuals looking to try the sport of triathlons as well as triathletes looking for winter training motivation.

This class works on the three disciplines needed for a triathlon...swimming, biking, and running. Each week you will meet with an instructor twice focusing on at least two sports weekly. Wednesdays will be biking and/ or running while Fridays focuses on swimming. This course is for beginners and intermediate athletes looking to improve their skills in swimming, biking and running as well as looking for some winter training motivation. The class will also help participants train for the Winter Tri on Saturday (2/4).

Physical Education

MIT PE OFFICE

Physical Education offers courses designed for undergraduate students to complete the 8 point General Institute Requirement and swim requirement. There are over 40 types of courses including: aquatics, dance, individual sports, team sports, fitness, health and wellness, and outdoor education.  

Courses meet twice a week for 60 minutes for 4 weeks during IAP, January 9-February 2. Participants must attend first class to secure spot.

Registration for PE is online first come, first serve. Undergraduate registration begins November 30 at 8am and graduate registration begins December 6 at 8am. Registration for all closes Wednesday, December 7 at 1p. Non-students can submit a request to register and will be added to courses if space is available.  Note: non-students must have DAPER membership during 4 weeks and pay $75 course fee.

SCUBA Class

In this class students will learn the practical skills to be a safe open-water SCUBA diver. Class is split into two parts; the why and how of SCUBA diving which involves classroom and pool training. Upon completion of the course students will receive a voucher for the open water dives and certification with SCUBA Schools International (SSI) certification. Note: There is a fee associated with this course. See mitpe.mit.edu for details. Detailed schedule on Physical Education website. Strength and Conditioning (S&C) is a specific method of training that incorporates all aspects of fitness. Scientists have determined they are 9 elements of fitness; strength, power, agility, balance, flexibility, local muscle endurance, cardiovascular endurance, strength endurance, and coordination. This class will test you mentally and physically and can push your cardiovascular system to its' limit.
