Fibers are a universal material which can be formed into, among other things, clothing, tools, and structures. Knitting is a historically rich, technical tradition in which fibers are manipulated into a piece of fabric through a system of interlocking loops.

In this beginner workshop, participant will receive instruction in the core skills of knitting: casting on, basic stitches, and casting off. The workshop will mix demonstration, hands-on instruction, and on-on-one technical help. The goal is to learn the main steps of knitwear production, to acquire basic handwork skills, and to discuss next steps for continuing the craft.

Build your own Electric Guitar class

John Armstrong, Instrutor

Enrollment: Limited: Advance sign-up required
Sign-up by 12/21
Limited to 5 participants
Attendance: Participants must attend all sessions
Prereq: Hobby Shop membership
Fee: $50.00 for Machining tools

Now in its eleventh year, this popular class continues to build on the long-standing tradition of instrument making in the Hobby Shop.  Making full use of the Shop’s many tools, including the CNC router, students will build, finish and assemble their own solid-body, bolt-on neck electric guitar or bass.

The types of instruments available to choose from include Stratocaster and Telecaster-style guitars and a Precision-style bass.  The first step in the process is a required meeting with the instructor in December to select instrument type, body and other parameters.  The result will be a bill of materials that each student must order and have delivered prior to the beginning of class.  The cost of these parts will depend on the wood and components selected with the lower end of the range (for good quality parts) of approximately:

Stratocaster-style guitar, $400

Telecaster style guitar, $375

Precision-style bass, $350

Due to time constraints we are limited to these type of electric guitar bodies.

When the workshop begins, students will transform a prepared blank into a completed body, ready to accept the production-made neck and other components.

English Change Ringing in Boston

Austin Paul

Enrollment: Everyone is welcome; please email ahead to get directions to the towers
Attendance: Participants welcome at individual sessions

What we do: Ring tower bells in permutations (n!), like Paul Revere (and a bunch of English people) at Old North Church and Church of the Advent in Boston. Learn change-ringing, the traditional English style of ringing bells. We follow mathematical patterns instead of sheet music to ring up to 8 large tower bells with each bell controlled by a single rope.

Change ringing = Combinatorics + Music. Those changes in the order of the bells’ sounding that constitute a method are governed by 4 rules:  (a) no bell may move more than one position at each change/row; (b) each bell sounds once in each row; (c) no row is repeated; and (d) the ringing begins and ends in Rounds.

Curious? See http://nagcr.org/pamphlet.html for a slightly longer description, or just come on out and join us!

Please wear comfortable, warm clothes. No previous musical experience necessary -- IAP is a great time for first-time learners! The Guild of Bellringers is a secular organization. Everyone is welcome at any or all sessions. Email us to get directions to the towers and instructions on how to enter.

“The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity.”Alberto Giacometti

Students will learn about drawing and painting from observation as well as about making successful creative choices. During this workshop students will observe real objects, and learn to translate the physical world to the representational via drawing and painting. Precursory sketches and a final mixed media piece will be created. Students will look to Wayne Thiebaud, Giorgio Morandi, Paul Cezanne, and Henri Matisse for inspiration.

Students should bring their own canvas (any shape/size, but no smaller than 14 X 14, please!) and a #2 pencil on the first day.  Other materials are supplied by the SAA.  Art supplies are available at Artist and Craftsman and Blick Art, both in Central Square, Cambridge.

Play has been studied as a very powerful and engaging activity with a lot of benefits. In this class, we will explore the idea of playful design, trying to come up with prototypes demonstrating new forms of play.

During this class, you will learn more about play. What is it? What makes that activity so engaging? Is play a dedicated activity for childhood?

Together, we will explore the idea of playful objects. What makes a design playful? How can you do it? You will experiment and discover guidelines to design with the idea of play.

This class is a 3-Day workshop dedicated to playful design. Making, ideating, exchanging and exploring are the main activities that we will do in the class.

We will explore playful design through 2 thematics :

Playful Office Supplies

Office supplies can be very boring, mostly functional and not necessarily very user friendly. However, there are quite common material that we use regularly. How might we design office supplies that create playful experiences?

Creativity Room Objects

A creativity room is a space to get inspiration, start using your imagination and design something creative. Creativity rooms are usually very nice spaces, but they have a lack of identity and of tools to guide people. How might we design playful objects that enhance an experience in a creativity room?

Attendance: Repeating event, participants welcome at any session

Each week, the Radio Society meets in the shack for a few hours on Friday night and does something fun and related to ham radio. Join us! Past activities include working on the EME (Earth-Moon-Earth) moon bounce station with the MIT UHF Repeater Association, tuning in to amateur radio bands and hearing stations all over the world, opening up and looking at a radio transmitter, and learning about how our antennas work. This is also a particularly good event to chat with and get to know the members of the Radio Society.

Watchmaking: the Mechanical Watch

Gerald J. Sussman, Panasonic Professor of EECS

Enrollment: Advanced sign-up; MIT students preferred
Sign-up by 01/18
Limited to 32 participants
Attendance: Required Lecture, one assigned section

Most watches these days are electronic miracles, but we
cannot easily get insight into how they work. The
traditional mechanical wristwatch is different in that we
can see all of the parts and how they interact. A
mechanical watch is a high-precision mechanical device with
lots of clever ideas and insights that we can learn from.

In this activity each student will learn about the design
and construction of a mechanical watch. The student will
take apart a watch movement and put it back together, with
instruction and help from Brianna Le, a watchmaker from the
New York Horological Society, and Prof. Jerry Sussman (an
amateur watchmaker). The entire exercise will take 4 hours.
and each session will be limited to 8 students. Students
need no prior experience, and all tools and materials will
be provided by the instructors, as needed.

Before the activity, Professor Sussman will also give a lecture on the theory
of the mechanical watch and its relationships to an
electronic impulse-driven oscillator.
