Come learn capoeira! First-timers especially welcome! Open to all ages and ability levels.
Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music. Developed as a method of self-defense disguised as a dance, Capoeira was born out of the Brazilian slaves’ desire for freedom. Capoeira is a dynamic physical dialogue - a conversation through movement which can take on many shades of meaning.
Class includes a warm up followed by learning movements and sequences. We will often conclude with a "roda" or circle in which capoeira is practiced with the traditional instruments.
Wear athletic attire and bring water. Unlimited enrollment; advance sign-up requested. While you're not required to come to all sessions of the class, you will improve the most if you attend weekly.

In this course we will explore the Foundations of Raja Yoga to re-awaken the self to being the journey to our original experience of peace, love, and inner power. "Raja" means King, and thus Raja Yoga means to have mastery over one's thoughts, feelings, emotions to direct them towards peace and happiness.
This is done by meditating and experiencing the eternal spiritual identity of the soul and experiencing the original qualities of the soul. We will explore the three main functions of the soul; the mind, the intellect and the impressions that have been left on the soul as a result of the actions we perform in life.
We will also explore the power of thoughts and how they can bring harmony in our relationships. Learn to harness thought power to create better relationships in your life. We will share methods to deepen our link to the Source of unconditional love. Another meaning of "Raja Yoga" is highest union (yoga - Sanskrit root word "to unite"). When we keep ourselves full of this precious gift, we have so much more to give others.

Fictional narratives allow for authors to discuss real-life struggles in a veiled manner. By taking their own experiences and those they observe in reality but embedding them in an invented context, authors can transmit emotionally resonant elements without becoming overwhelmed by the painful details of their own recollections. Similarly, readers might take away more from a story that speaks to their struggles than they do from their own initial musings about difficult times in their own lives.
Speculative Fiction (i.e., Science Fiction, Magical Fantasy, Superheroic Fantasy) works can provide some of the most effective "veils" for difficult life questions. Their remove from the everyday world provides dense camouflage for raising questions about life's meaning, political disagreements, and the nature of the human mind. Moreover, by suspending the rules of time and space that give us all frustration, they further reduce the distress we might experience when the same questions are raised in a realistic narrative. Lastly, some Speculative works deliberately play with physical reality in a way that triggers our deep seated fears of loss of control, what Freud termed "The Uncanny."
This course will discuss psychiatric themes in Speculative Fiction. The aim is to provide education about psychological theories through the aid of relevant Speculative Fiction pieces, as well as to help explain the enduring appeal of Speculative Fiction.
