A bold new design experience for the entire MIT community will be offered throughout the final two weeks of IAP (January 19 - 29). Teams of undergraduate, graduate, faculty, staff and alumni will craft a collection of designs for a new residence system for the Institute. The design experience will be centered in a design curriculum and will feature community discussion, presentations by experts, and extensive design time. Outstanding designs will be identified at the conclusion of the two-week experience, and will serve as the foundation for community discussion throughout the spring semester. These, in turn, will ultimately help define the system accepted by the Chancellor for adoption and implementation by MIT. Teams may begin the 11-day event already formed, or may develop/merge during the five days of instruction and community discussion. The representation of the MIT community within each team is a critical element of the process. Teams will be stron gly encouraged to look to all facets of the community (undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, and alumni) to obtain leadership and input in the various areas of the design. Any member of the MIT community may join a team. The IAP design experience will be directed by the Residence System Design Steering Committee, chaired by William Hecht, Executive Vice President of the MIT Alumni Association. For complete information, view the URL.

We will work with people from different religious backgrounds using a prototype multi-user graphical environment under development at the Media Lab. The goal is to explore our own religious traditions as well as others by engaging in a hands-on fun and creative experience. Users are graphically represented in the virtual city and can create characters, objects and symbols from different religious traditions, and program their behaviors. We will design the virtual world and spend some time discussing each other's worldviews.
