Go behind the scenes at The List Visual Arts Center galleries during the design and construction phases for the winter visual arts exhibitions. Learn how unique spaces are created from the initial artist conception to design and construction. During this course students will tour and study the exhibition spaces for three single artist exhibitions under construction for ALFREDO JAAR, a photography show dealing with the aftermath of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, KIKI SMITH, new photography, and WILLIAM KENTRIDGE, drawings and video looking at the oppressor and oppressed in South Africa. The floor plans for these three varied exhibitions will be explained in detail as we proceed through the galleries. Also the use of video equipment and various lighting techniques and construction methods will be discussed. In the second session we will walk through the completed exhibitions and discuss the finished design. We will also discuss the forthcoming spring 1999 exhibit ions and examine the artist and curators role in developing new projects. In the final session using floor plans and models you will have the opportunity as a design team to discuss the development of the spring exhibition LANDSCAPE: OUTSIDE THE FRAME. This is a complex multi-media exhibition which includes four artist installations with specific space requirements. This course is presented by Jon Roll gallery manager/designer, Jennifer Riddell assistant curator, and Sabrina Detmar curatorial assistant.
