General Information

Overview:

This year we are offering a two player interactive competition in the Java language. We invite teams to write a program to play our mysterious board game, Konane. The rules of this board game will be announced at the start of the competition to give every team a fair start, but we can tell you now that Konane is simple yet unsolved. And it's a lot of fun to play.

Tournament:

The contest runs through the month of January. Complete specifications and game details will be released at the beginning of IAP and teams will have three weeks to come up with their best game-playing submissions. On January 30th 2001, there will be a live contest where we will play submissions against one another. The encounters will be open and displayed live to the entire MIT community using a graphics suite developed by our organizing team.

Depending on the number of entrants, the tournament will involve round robin match-ups and direct elimination bouts. It will be structured so that all submissions get a fair number of match-ups.

All solutions will be required to demonstrate fundamental functionality by the preliminary rounds on January 21st. The best two submissions at this stage will be anonymously made available to all teams so that they can gauge their position in the competition. Submissions that are invalid at this stage may be eliminated from the competition. The criteria for acceptability and  elimination will be announced on January 7th, 2001, and revised at the guest lecture on January 16th/17th.

A summary of the timeline of this competition is as follows:
