If you want to learn more about realtime strategy RTS games, go play one.
I would recommend
any of the following games as well-made classics, even though all are
slightly dated:
The first game is available for Windows and Mac, while the other games
are available on Windows only.
If you want a more general description of realtime strategy games
and PC games in general, this primer is for you.
It will first compare different game genres and describe some representative
titles from each.
It goes on to
explain the traditional building blocks of an RTS game
using StarCraft to
illustrate several key points. Finally it ends by discussing some
interesting variations on the basic theme, current trends
in the genre, and where RTS appears to be heading in the near future.
