MIT Green Computing
An Examination of the Environmental Effects of Computers at MIT

MIT Green Computing

Computers play an integral role at MIT for students, staff, departments and administrators. Important announcements are often sent by email, as it is the easiest and most efficient way to reach most people at this school. Additionally, most classes post important announcements on their web sites and completing homework assignments often times requires the use of computers. Yet, along with computers and computing at MIT come a host of environmental issues, implications, and impacts. This report focuses on MIT's current computing infrastructure, briefly touches upon the broad environmental issues of computers, and identifies some solutions to ameliorate the environmental impacts of MIT computing.

The report begins with a brief description of the environmental factors surrounding computers and then continues into a study of MIT students and departments.
