Bismuth Crystal Demonstrations

I demonstrate the crystallization of Bismuth metal, by melting it and allowing it to cool, and I give away the crystals I make. The process is fascinating to see, and provides a comfortable context for talking about the ways Materials Scientists think about the nature of metals and crystals. The interference colors of the Bismuth crystals is also a good context for talking about the science of light and color.

I made this Amazon.com list of supplies for making Bismuth crystals

Reproduction of novel blue pigment synthesis

I reproduced the synthesis of a new blue pigment, YIn0.95Mn0.05O3. It was originally discovered at the University of Oregon in 2009.

Metal Casting

I have experience (and fond memories) of preparing molds and casting metal from an induction furnace, as well as performing centrifugal casting. MIT MakerLodge

I helped create the MakerLodge program at MIT, as part of Project Manus. Creating the program was a collaborative effort between myself, undergraduate students, graduate students, and some other faculty and staff. I worked with the students to set up a new shop space at MIT, and I trained them on the equipment in that space so that they could develop training programs for other students in turn.

I quickly shot and edited the following video to help students study before getting quizzed and credentialed in MakerLodge to use the Universal Laser Systems VLS 3.50 laser cutter:

I wrote the following SOPs for equipment in the Lab for Engineering Materials in MIT's Materials Science Department:
