Athena Electronic Classroom Reservation Policy There are five reservable electronic classrooms: 1-115 with 22 Sun SPARC 5 workstations, 14-0637 with 16 color Sun SPARCclassics, and E53-220 with 19 Sun SPARCclassics, 2-032 with 16 Sun SPARC5's capable of running MAE (Macintosh Applications Environment), and 4-035 with 19 SGI Indy's. We are pleased that the MIT community has been finding these facilities excellent places in which to teach. Because we have experienced scheduling conflicts in the past, in the interest of equity we have instituted the following procedures for scheduling the rooms. 1. Towards the end of each semester, we will collect requests for reservations for the following semester by advertising deadlines in the Athena Insider. Requests that come in during these reservation periods will have priority over requests that come in later. 2. We will resolve time conflicts among the requests sent in during this early reservation period according to these guidelines: a. Academic MIT subjects will have priority over other classes. b. Subjects that have used the facilities in the past and have come to depend on them for teaching will have priority over new subjects. c. We will try to be equitable across departments and across subjects within a department. Thus, an instructor who requests very large blocks of time for a subject might be asked to find alternate time slots or make other adjustments when there are schedule conflicts. d. The Department of Humanities will have priority in 14-0637, since they helped to find the space for and fund the classroom. e. We do not accept undergraduates as instructors in the electronic classrooms. Only under very exceptional circumstances will we consider an undergraduate as an instructor. 3. We will confirm early requests as soon after the end of the reservation periods as possible. After that date, scheduling for classes will be done on a first-come first-served basis. 4. Requests for use of the facilities by groups other than MIT subjects will be honored, but are not guaranteed until two weeks before the date requested. While we recognize that these procedures may require some departments and other groups to plan further in advance than they have in the past, we appreciate your co-operation in helping us manage the use of these shared resources. Please send all questions and reservation requests via email to , or by phone to Maryam Afshar, x3-1346.
