UROP Lockers - Description and Allocation Policy The ACS Faculty Liaisons, working together with the User Accounts Office, offers additional disk space on Athena (up to 30 meg) for any undergraduate student working on a UROP project who needs the additional resource. This document describes how to get a urop locker and the conditions surrounding its use. What is a UROP Locker? ---------------------- A UROP locker, like any other locker on Athena, is an allocation of disk space stored centrally on one of the Athena file servers. Urop lockers are accessible via the attach command and may have customized or standard access control lists. UROP lockers may be used to store files related to a UROP project for the duration of that project. How do I get one? ---------------- You may request additional disk space by sending email to accounts@mit.edu, stating that you are interested in a UROP locker. They will respond with a request for you to provide some basic information about your project including your disk space needs and the name of your UROP sponsor. If all the information seems fine, your locker will be ready within a couple of days. The information you will need to provide is: UROP sponsor: name for locker: (1) size in Meg: duration of project: brief description of project: (1) We will add a prefix to the locker name you select to indicate who is sponsoring the project. For instance, if you are working for an EECS faculty member the prefix will be "6.". Shortly after your UROP locker allocation, you will receive notification from the Faculty Liaison Office, reminding you that this locker is subject to certain restrictions, namely that it is to be used solely for UROP work. Restrictions on the Use of UROP Lockers --------------------------------------- UROP lockers are strictly for work being done on a UROP project. We regretfully cannot continue to support UROP projects which evolve into theses, graduate work, or research. Resource needs for these projects must be met by individual departments, and we reserve the right to contact UROP sponsors to determine whether the project is still ongoing. The maximum size for a UROP locker is 30 Meg. Although we can set the access control list on the locker to restrict or permit access to the locker as you specify, we request that you grant the Faculty Liaisons access so that we may quickly assist you. This is the default unless you request otherwise. We do not usually look at locker contents but may on occasion do so, particularly when investigating problems. Within a month after the end date you state on your UROP locker request form, you will receive a notification that the locker is about to expire. If your project has been extended for any reason, it is your responsibility to provide a new termination date with confirmation from your sponsor. If we do not hear from you, your locker will be deactivated. Under normal circumstances, we will not allocate a locker for an initial length of time exceeding 18 months.
