Starting on September 16, students can access new functions in MIT's on-line student information system (SIS). Previously, students could use SIS to update some campus addresses, view their grades, view the status of their registration, and view a term-by-term "transcript" of their courses. The new functions will include: * An overnight waiting period for SIS passwords. (Previously, students had to wait two weeks once they registered for their SIS password before they could use SIS.) * Summaries of financial-aid awards. * Current status of financial-aid applications. * Most recent student-account bills. * Scholarship information and personal-scholarship status. * Loan information and personal-loan status. To use the system, you should first get an extra password, by doing the following: 1. Log on to Athena. 2. At the athena% prompt type: add register; reg_extra This program will go through the process of getting an extra password. Students who forget their passwords will have to go to the Athena Accounts office with a picture ID to get their passwords changed. Passwords will be accepted the day after they are registered. To use the new version of SIS, log on to Athena at an Athena workstation and do one of the following: * At the athena% prompt type: sis OR, * under the Dash Menu, goto Special, and select Student Info Svcs The SIS log on screen will appear. Type in your MIT ID and your own extra password. After a few seconds you should see the message 'Password confirmed. Select a menu option' at the bottom of the screen. You're in! If you want to see any of your personal information, go to the Student Menu Item at the top of the screen. For more information, see the On-Line Student Access team's web page at http://web.mit.edu/studentserve/fast/www/olsa/. If you have any problems, questions or comments, please send them sis@mit.edu. For reference, the team responsible for the upgrades to SIS, the On-Line Student Access Team, is composed of: Jag Patel Huey Chan Shawn Dunn Carrie Groves Barbara Johnson Ri Romano Andy Oakland Robert Weinerman Steve Turner (main programmer/tech resource for the team) [John Hollywood assisted with the writing of this article. --Ed.] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CAREER SERVICES OFFERS ACCESS TO ON-LINE JOBS DATABASE Submitted by Hannah Bernstein Assistant Director, Alumni Career Services [The following is a reprint of a memo sent to academic departments by Career Services. --Ed.] The MIT Office of Career Services is pleased to announce a new free service for MIT students and alumni which complements the other job resources provided by our office. In conjunction with JobTrak, an online database service, we now offer access to an online database of jobs which companies have sent specifically for MIT. Only MIT students with an MIT.EDU account (or students off campus and alumni who have a password) can access MIT's job listings on JobTrak. To see the MIT job listings, go to the JobTrak Web site: http://www.jobtrak.com. Select "job listings" from the menu. Then select "MIT" from the list of schools. You will automatically be able to access the job listings. Alumni or students off campus (not using an MIT.EDU account) who need a password should email to hannahb@mit.edu with your name, course number, and year of graduation. Feel free to send questions about JobTrak to this email address also. As this is a new service, we expect the database to grow. Job listings are updated daily. The database is searchable by type of job, geographic location, and experience. Summer jobs and internships may be listed on JobTrak in the future. Please note that the jobs on JobTrak are different from the jobs posted in the Job Binders in the Career Office (12-170). We encourage you to use both of these resources. Jobs in JobTrak may not represent all fields and will probably reflect the job market in general. Alumni who hold graduate degrees from the Sloan School of Management may contact the Sloan Alumni Relations Office, tel. (617)253-1557, for information about how to access the Sloan School's database on JobTrak. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- STUDENT ROBBED OF BICYCLE OUTSIDE MCCORMICK HALL Submitted by Sgt. Cheryl Vossmer, MIT Campus Police [The following is a reprint of a MIT Campus Police bulletin, dated September 12, 1996. --Ed.] Please be advised that on Wednesday, September 11,1996, at approximately 4:30 pm a student was robbed of his GT Outpost bicycle on Amherst Alley by McCormick Hall. The victim reports he and a friend were standing by McCormick Hall when they were approached by 3 black males on bicycles. One of the subjects approached the victim and asked him if he wanted to sell his bike. The victim said "no" at which time a second suspect dropped the bike he was riding and stood behind the victim. As the victim attempted to flee by riding away the subjects surrounded him and grabbed him from behind. One suspect put his hand into his pocket and made a gesture as if he had a weapon of some kind; telling the victim he better get off the bike. The victim then gave up his bike and all three subjects fled the area towards Mass. Ave. The subjects left behind the bike they dropped. The victim describes the suspects as follows: Subject #1, black male, 6'0", approximately 230 lbs., wearing a red, white and blue vertically striped short sleeve shirt, blue jean shorts and a gold earring in his left ear. Subject #2, black male, approximately 5'11", early 20ies, medium build, wearing a white shirt, grey jogging pants and grey rimmed rectangular sun glasses. No description on the third subject. The MIT Campus Police Detectives are investigating this incident and anyone who witnessed this or could provide any information is asked to please contact the MIT Police at x8-9723 or our anonymous tip section on our home page . The MIT Campus Police Crime Prevention Unit recommends the following safety precautions: * If you are the victim of a crime or see suspicious activity on campus, contact the MIT Campus Police. * Become familiar with the locations of emergency telephones They are easily identifiable by their blue light, or dial "100" from any campus telephone. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DR.
