Norview High School
Adaptive communication device for people with cerebral palsy
The Norview High School InvenTeam will invent the “Conversation Starter,” a touch-pad interface that provides individuals with severely restricted dexterity and/or limited verbal ability the opportunity to initiate and conduct auditory communications, both locally and at a distance. The interface will use a touch sensitive LCD pad to present pictures, words, and pre-programmed menu choices to the user. It will transform the user’s selections into an auditory signal for local (speaker) or remote (embedded cell phone) transmission. The unit will be smaller and lighter than a laptop computer, will cost under $800, and will allow caregivers to track the users’ location.
