Biomanufacturing

Biomanufacturing, one of the most complex types of manufacturing, has emerged as an area of promise for economic development in Massachusetts. With support from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) and working with the Life Sciences Collaborative’s Biomanufacturing Task Force, IPC researchers are studying the locational dynamics of the biomanufacturing sector (Reynolds' working paper) . The Center, in collaboration with MTC, has hosted the MA Biomanufacturing Roundtable whose participants, drawn from many of the leading biomanufacturing firms in Massachusetts, are developing recommendations on how to strengthen the state’s biomanufacturing capabilities. Current strategies being developed include:

• Building capacity in drug product / delivery systems
• Company-to-company exchange on bioprocesing standards
• A university-industry R & D network
• Education and Training

MIT has a number of initiatives in the biomanufacturing area including the Center for Biomedical Innovation BioMAN Research Program.

Elisabeth Reynolds acts as advisor to the Roundtable. Professors Charlie Cooney and Richard Lester are both members.
