ANTS Seminar: Thursday, April 6, 2006
Challenges/Opportunities for Nanotechnology and the National
Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI)
Dr. James S. Murday
Naval Research Laboratory
Nanoscale Science Engineering and Technology Subcommittee,
NSTC
The U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative, now five years
old, is one of many worldwide that seek to foster a science
base for nanostructures, and the transition of science discovery
into innovative technologies. How does the U.S. effort compare
in that global effort? Have the science discoveries in nanoscience
been worth the nearly $5B U.S. Federal investment? Is there
evidence for transition of those discoveries into innovative
technology, let alone into actual products in the marketplace?
What roles might the Federal investment and policy play in
accelerating the transitions? These are issues shaping the
new NNI strategic plan. This presentation will examine the
status of nanoscience/nanotechnology, review the NNI vision/goals/
strategies, and assess the growing impact of nanostructures
on technologies and markets. As time permits, given the special
role of the MIT Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies, the
potential impact of the nanometer size scale on defense and
security will also be examined.
All seminars take place at 500 Technology Square (MIT
Building NE47), First Floor Seminar Room. Any member of
the MIT or Army communities is welcome to attend. For more
information, write to isn@mit.edu.
