Project 3.3.3: Molecular to Macroscale Exploration of Fundamental Properties of Gels
Synthetic polymer gels that accurately mimic the mechanical deformation of biological soft tissues are critical to the innovation of Soldier survivability strategies in response to blast and ballistic injury. There are currently no synthetic materials that meet this requirement for soft-tissues including heart and brain, due chiefly to challenges in robust gel
or such tissue trauma, and the other ISN project teams focused on tissue damage, treatment, and protection. Expected benefits include new tools, models, and materials to predict fundamental material principles for rate-dependent gel and biotissue deformation and to mitigate soft-tissue damage under extreme impact loading.
