New IS&T Employee Orientation: Buddy Checklist

Prior to New Employee Arrival

  • "Buddy" will contact and introduce self to the new employee prior to starting date for work.
  • Plan to be available for several hours during the new employee's first day.

First Day

  • Show new employee around immediate work area/building: restrooms, coffee area, lunch area, etc. Show them where to get supplies and equipment.
  • Introduce the new employee to others.
  • Take new employee to get an MIT ID card.
  • Optionally, go to lunch with new employee.
  • Meet with new employee at the end of the day to see how things went.
  • Answer questions the new employee may have.
  • Ask if there is anything needed.

First Week

  • Continue to introduce the new employee to others.
  • Provide tour of IS&T buildings, different processes, etc.
  • Provide tour of essential MIT areas, including departments relevant to new employee's job, human resources, student center, bank machines, cash office, Medical Department, etc.
  • Go to lunch with them -- or arrange to meet them for lunch in the building lunch area -- for the first few days (not charged to IS&T).
  • Explain IS&T reporting structure and culture, as it may affect the new employee.
  • Answer questions the new employee may have.
  • Ask if there is anything needed, and connect them to the best people to meet those needs.
  • Offer encouragement.

  • Continue to offer support as work intensifies.
  • Bring to IS&T meetings or outside related meetings , as appropriate.
