New IS&T Employee Orientation: IS&T Human Resources (IST-HR) Team Checklist

Prior to New Employee Arrival

  • Notify and remind Supervisor and Administrative Assistant/Site Team of their roles in orientation.

First Week

  • Meet with the new employee in the first week of employment (either in a one on one session or, if there are numerous new employees, in a group session) to cover:

    • Organizational history and mission
    • Profile of IS&T business: overview of customers, financial info, etc.
    • IS&T structure: Directors, reporting relationships, team relationships
    • Policies & procedures: performance appraisals, salary increases, promotions, etc.
    • Security and safety
    • Culture/Norms/Competencies: general performance and behavior expectations, how teams are formed and projects distributed, etc.
    • Hot/New/Current Projects

Second Week

  • Check in with new employee.

  • Survey new employees to find out how orientation program has helped them (or hasn't), offering them a choice of either:
    • An individual meeting, or
    • The web site survey.

  • Maintain Orientation Web Page
    Develop and maintain web page (as part of the IST-HR pages) which includes:
    • Links to IS&T/MIT resources
    • Checklists for IS&T staff conducting orientation for new employees
    • IS&T Orientation process
    • Links to MIT electronic tour
    • MIT orientation
