New IS&T Employee Orientation: Supervisor Checklist
Prior to New Employee Arrival
- Meet with IS&T Human Resources (IST-HR) Team member to review roles in new employee
orientation.
- Notify Administrative Assistant/Site Team of appropriate mailing
lists to place new employee on for various hardcopy and electronic
correspondence. If Administrative Assistant/Site Team does not
have rights to do so, the Supervisor will have to do it.
- Work with Administrative Assistant/Site Team to determine location
of new employee's workstation/cubicle/office.
- Have Administrative Assistant/Site Team set up employee's workstation/cubicle/office.
- Arrange initial schedule, work assignments, and expectations
for new employee.
- Notify the Administrative Assistant as to the time and place
for the new employee's first day arrival.
- Assign a current IS&T employee (preferably on his/her team)
to be the new employee's "buddy". Provide that person
with contact information for the new employee. This person will
be in charge of:
- Introducing the new employee to others
- Showing him/her around (tours)
- Going to lunch with them on the first few days
- Showing them where to get supplies and equipment
- Explaining IS&T hierarchy and culture
- Answering questions the new employee may have
- Meeting with new employee at the end of the day to see how
things went
- Asking if there is anything needed
- Providing answers
- Offering encouragement.
- Send email to the IS&T mailing list announcing the new
employee's start date, background information, location, email,
and phone number.
- Send an email to the IS&T Human Resources (IST-HR) Team to arrange for the IST-HR
first week meeting with the new employee.
- Ask Administrative Assistant/Site Team to arrange for any resources
-- proxcard, credit card, business cards, etc.
First Day
- Review and sign I-9 Employment Eligibility form.
- Verify employee has been scheduled for HR orientation.
- Introduce the new employee to team.
- Review initial schedule, work assignments, and expectations
with new employee.
- Make sure he/she is settled into their work area, already set
up with immediate work needs met.
- Meet with new employee at the end of the day to see how things
went.
- Answer questions the new employee may have.
First Week
- Schedule the new employee for an "Orientation to Computing at
MIT" Quick Start.
- Arrange a team lunch or a lunch with the supervisor and employee only (charged to IS&T).
- Meet with new employee at the end of each day to see how things
went.
