FileMaker - Development EnvironmentITAG Standard #11: The development environment should be appropriate to the desktops being supported. This usually means a cross-platform tool. Cross-platform developmentA big part of the appeal of FileMaker to the MIT community is that it is a cross-platform application. This allows for the development of server/client databases that can be accessed by both Windows and Mac users. Current IS&T-supported client platforms and OS's are: As of v9, FileMaker Pro (client) is fully compatible with both Windows Vista and Intel Macs. FileMaker Server, however, is not compatible with Vista. It should be running on a server OS. FileMaker Server is not compatible with Leopard (Mac OS 10.5); when a compatibility patch becomes available in early 2008, it can be downloaded from the FileMaker Inc. web site. Be mindful of preserving the cross-platform functionality of your FileMaker solution. It is possible to extend FileMaker's capabilities through Applescript and VBScript. However, by doing so you eliminate the cross-platform nature of your application, thus placing platform restrictions on its current and future users. |
