FileMaker - Network Protocols

ITAG Standard #6: Client/Server applications must operate on the current MITnet communications protocol (TCP/IP).

FileMaker and TCP/IP

Earlier versions of FileMaker ran on AppleTalk (Mac OS 9 and earlier) and IPX/SPX (Windows). Since the advent of FileMaker version 7, that is no longer true. You must be running FileMaker on a TCP/IP network to share data.

Unsupported versions of FileMaker

If you have FileMaker solutions in versions prior to version 7, you should still be running them on TCP/IP, even though the AppleTalk and IPX/SPX options may exist within the application for data sharing. To switch from unsupported protocols to TCP/IP in FileMaker 5.x or 6 in Windows, go to Edit > Preferences > Application to open the Application Preferences dialog box. Next to Network Protocol, select TCP/IP from the drop-down list and click OK. Do this for every FileMaker client that needs to share data.
